        Out of box

1 Problem statement- construct a box of maximum dimension 40cmX 40cmX 40cm that houses a mechanism to kick off a 150g block placed on its lid.

        2 Specifications
        ●    The box is a hollow cube of 40cmX 40cmX 40cm with just ONE  lid on the top.
        ●    The sturdiness of the box depends on the material used by the participants to construct their box.
Therefore box can be made of any material, for example plywood,sheet-metal etc.
        ●    The Lid hinges are the part of the box structure and should NOT be a part of any mechanism.
        ●    The team can touch start the mechanism via the trigger just ONCE, any more interventions and interruptions amounts into penalty.
        ●    The box should have a trigger (switch) to the mechanism sticking out from one of the four faces
        (excluding the lid and base).
        ●    The team shall be given 3 trials and 15 minutes of resetting up between each trial.
        ●    The box must house a mechanism to kick off the weight 150g placed on the lid.
        ●    The mechanism should be purely mechanical i.e NO other forms of energy can be used  in the mechanism (example electrical energy, chemical energies are not allowed).
        ●    The team shall be given 3 trials and 15 minutes of resetting up between each trial.
        ●    Hydraulic and pneumatic systems are  strictly NOT allowed in the mechanism.
        ●    The mechanism can stretch up to a maximum of 60cm in the vertical direction when triggered. (measured from the base of the box)- Penalty in this regard is discussed in the later section.

        3 The Trial
        ●    The team shall be given 3 trials and 15 minutes of resetting up between each trial.
        ●    Duration of 45 minutes shall be given to the team before the first trial.
        ●    The team can place the weight 150g anywhere on the lid. The teams need not stick to the same position of the weight during all the trials.

        4 Scoring and Judging criteria
        ●    A >>For  innovative mechanism (a maximum of 100 points)
        ●    B >> For effective use of junk/waste parts (a maximum of 100 points)
        ●    C >> For aesthetic appeal of the mechanism + accuracy of the abstract (a maximum 100 points)
        ●    X>> For distance of the weight from the center of the box (X=( x*10))
        ●    Note: The box is triggered, the point wherever the weight falls first is marked on the ground. The distance of that point from the center of the box projected vertically on the ground is measured and denoted as 'x'
        ●    Y>>Number of human interventions (Y=(y*10))
y is the number of human interventions
        • N>>If the mechanism stretches 'n' cm above the 60cm mark(measured from the base of the box in vertical direction)where N=(n*10)
        TOTAL SCORE (S) = A + B + C +X - Y- N

Note: In unusual circumstances of tie, the weights shall be increased and the teams shall be given 1 trial each.
NIDARSHAN Panel of judges' decision is final ,unquestionable and irrefutable.

        5  Team specifications
        ●    Maximum of 3 members per team including one team leader.
        ●    Any number of teams from a college is allowed.
Teams formed from students of different institutions are allowed as long as each one of them has a valid Photo Id of their respective institution.

        6 Abstract submissions
        ●    The team is required to submit a FINAL ABSTRACT not more than 500 words.
        ●    The abstract must explain the mechanism used and the box materials.
        ●    Abstract should be emailed as an attachment in ”teamcode.pdf ” format within 20th October 2010 to nidarshan.mech@gmail.com
Example: OOB117.pdf would be the abstract file of a team with team code OOB117
        ●    The team leader must get three hard copies of the same FINAL ABSTRACT and submit it to the judges’
panel while the 45 minutes set-up is going on.
        ●    The team is allowed to make the changes in the abstract and hence mechanism but must notify the panel of judges well before the event. Remember that  accuracy  of the abstract is a criterion for judging.
        ●    Pictures/diagrammatic representations of the mechanisms in the abstract MAY prove to be advantageous to the teams.

        7 Materials provided
        ●    The weight block will be given to the participants.
        ●    A table will be given for the participants to set up their mechanisms.
Note: NIDARSHAN shall NOT provide ANY tools including even a most basic spanner set or screw driver et cetera; Participants are free to get their tools and attachments)
